Ummm... a Walnut tree, maybe? If I remember right they're great for climbing and they have smooth bark like that. Not sure if they get that big at the base, though. Anyway - looks fun!
we went walking in the chilterns yesterday and i did happen to notice how close to hemel we were! beautiful countryside and a very nice (saxon/norman?) church in little missenden. didn't climb any trees though.
